Ain't She Sweet
Songwriters: Milton Ager, Jack Yellen, and Arthur Rebner
Oh ain't she sweet,
Well see her walking down that street.
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?
Oh ain't she nice,
Well look her over once or twice.
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she nice?
Just cast an eye
In her direction.
Oh me oh my,
Ain't that perfection?
Oh I repeat
Well don't you think that's kind of neat?
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?
Oh ain't she sweet,
Well see her walking down that street.
Well I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?
Oh ain't that nice,
Well look it over once or twice.
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she nice?
Just cast an eye
In her direction.
Oh me oh my,
Ain't that perfection?
Oh I repeat
Well don't you think that's kind of neat?
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?
Oh ain't she sweet,
Well see her walking down that street.
Well I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?
Well I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?
Well see her walking down that street.
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?
Oh ain't she nice,
Well look her over once or twice.
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she nice?
Just cast an eye
In her direction.
Oh me oh my,
Ain't that perfection?
Oh I repeat
Well don't you think that's kind of neat?
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?
Oh ain't she sweet,
Well see her walking down that street.
Well I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?
Oh ain't that nice,
Well look it over once or twice.
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she nice?
Just cast an eye
In her direction.
Oh me oh my,
Ain't that perfection?
Oh I repeat
Well don't you think that's kind of neat?
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?
Oh ain't she sweet,
Well see her walking down that street.
Well I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?
Well I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?
One time after class, Cynthia was packing up her belongings when John started to play on his constant companion, the guitar. He looked right at Cynthia while singing Ain't She Sweet. Cynthia got startled and quickly hurried out of there! After John and Cynthia started to date, he would perform the song with the (Silver) Beatles. If she was in the audience, John would look right at her.
“...but probably when were were in college and he sang 'Ain’t She Sweet’ to me. Did my heart melt? Yes, and I walked out in embarrassment. It was so beautifully done. That always sticks with me.”
Cynthia, 2005
“He wasn't like any of the boyfriends I’d had before. He didn't have good looks. He was just a guy with horn-rimmed glasses and scruffy hair. There was something incredibly sexy about him, but he didn't have to play at it. The first real connection we had was him playing 'Ain't She Sweet’ on guitar. I just melted.”
Cynthia, 2005
Around the first time John sang to Cynthia, she had learned that he had recently lost his mother. She soften her feelings for him as she knew what it was like to lose a parent- despite different circumstances. Their relationships with Barry and Thelma started to dwindle. Barry broke up with Cynthia after falling in love with a neighbor girl; Cynthia was devastated and walked her dog to his home. Eventually the relationship failed and Barry returned to Cynthia, claiming he truly loved her all along during his mistake. She took him back and they decided to get engaged; Cynthia had sex for the first and only time with Barry in her Hoylake, Blackpool home she shared with her mother, who was out at the time. He pursued her and, well, it wasn't that impressionable. Cynthia made sure that they weren't really left alone like that but continued on dating Barry while developing a crush and feelings for John. Meanwhile, John's relationship with Thelma was running out of steam. Thelma soon took a leave of absence from school.
“It just petered out. I certainly didn't end it. He didn't either. We still stayed part of the same crowd of students.”
Thelma Pickles, 1985
