That's the one question I have seen often asked. For the most part, certain 'friends’, employees, fans, family, spectators, researchers, and so on would say that John wasn't truly in love until he met Yoko Ono. They were, and still are, an ultimate love story. I don't think so, really. If anybody in the Beatles that's a love story would be Paul and Linda McCartney and/or Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach. If Linda hadn't died, there's no question that she and Paul would still be married today. Both couple were rarely apart; meanwhile, John and Yoko did separate for over a year, both dated and had affairs. I don't doubt that John loved Yoko but I do think that their love story is exaggerated.
As I mentioned before in a previous post, John's love story with Cynthia has been looked upon as an obligation since they got married after she announced a pregnancy. But I do know there is so much more to their story, which will be broken down. No one really thought too deep of their relationship… maybe they (certain 'friends’, employees, fans, family, spectators, researchers, and so on) are too happy with their opinions about John and Cynthia's relationship to not really care about it. I had kinda hoped that Cynthia's death would've opened and woke up new memories that were forgotten and buried deep in their subconsciousness but I have seen little improvement since. But… to be fair… quite a number have been dying out. In the last twenty years or so, there have been deaths from Neil Aspinall, Pete Shotton, Stanley Parkes, Leila Harvey, Tony Carricker, Ray McFall, Sir George Martin, George Harrison, Linda, Maureen Starkey, etc. Some feel that they have told their story enough times and want to focus on more important events. Whatever the case may be, I don't agree.
Sure, John wasn't the perfect boyfriend/husband material- there are moments where I want to slap him!- he did cheat, he did misbehave. There's no denying that. But there's also a reason why John carried on a romance with Cynthia for a few years before pregnancy and marriage. He could have ended it at any time. In fact, there was a break up and it was John who wanted to get back with Cynthia again. There were separations but not the 'we are on a break’ kind. When John toured, he could have fallen for someone on the road. John cheated, but the women were discarded like toilet paper. John obviously felt some sort of strong feeling for Cynthia- he protected her from fame, gangs, and fans as best he could. He saw himself as the breadwinner and Cynthia as his wife and mother. She was his muse, stability rock, friend, someone he trusted, supporter. They were opposites, yet for 10 years they managed to fit and be together.
“I fell in love with Cynthia. It's as simple as that.”
John, 1964
“It was said I never loved Cyn. That's far from the truth. We were young, bigheaded, and got into a physical relationship too soon. Perhaps if we took things slow, we would have made it. I know we would have made it.”
John, 1974
